Skagway Geography
Skagway is a borough with a population of approximately 862 (year 2000 census) inhabitants. It is located in the Skagway-Hoonah-Angoon Country, Southeast Alaska (also known as the Alaska Panhandle) in the United States of America. It is found on the northern region of the Taiya Inlet and the Lynn Canal.
The town neighbors Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, and Haines. It has a total area of about 464.4 square miles of which 2.56% is water, and a latitude of about 59° 27′ 30″ N and a longitude of 135° 18′ 50″ W. It also has twelve outstanding mountain summits that can be seen from a distance.
Skagway has a four seasons climate. The warmest months are from June to August, and this many tourists choose to visit Skagway during the summer. Although Skagway has many cold months, the coldest is from November and December to February and March, as these months have recorded sub zero temperatures, which is the norm.
Interestingly, the high tourist months bring in so many visitors far exceeding the permanent population. This is because Skagway is strategically located and the selected stop for many cruise ships. The natural environment of this town is well-preserved, and wildlife coexist with the residents.
