Skagway Port

Skagway’s port is strategically located and for this reason it is a transportation hub between Alaska and other countries in Asia, Europe, as well as territories in the northwest and Yukon in Canada.  The port is situated between the end of Lynn Canal and the beginning of Klondike Highway.  The water of this port is conveniently deep and consists of no ice.  It also plays an interesting part in the history of the town during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the World War II.

The port of Skagway also plays a key role in Skagway’s tourism industry, especially in terms of being an important stop for cruise ships in the region.  Hundreds of thousands of visitors enter through this port each year.  The port has several docks, which includes the White Pass Railroad dock used for bulk freight, Broadway dock mainly for cruise liners, Ore dock for ore concentrates, fuel barges and cruise liners, and the AML Barge dock.

Skagway port also has a small harbor for fishing boats, ferry vessels, and commercial tour boats.  The New Harbor Front Walkway is also within walking distance to the town area, and close to the visitor center where tourists can obtain useful information about Skagway.
